The Abia State Government has started building a 15MVA injection substation at Ogurube Layout in Umuahia. This project aims to improve electricity supply in the capital city.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, shared this news on Monday. He spoke to reporters at the Government House after the state Executive Council meeting.
Mr Kanu mentioned that they are working with the Niger Delta Power Holding Company on this project. He believes that when finished, it will greatly enhance power supply and improve the lives of Umuahia residents.
Ongoing Power Restoration Projects
He also mentioned that there are ongoing power restoration projects in Ohafia, Abam in Arochukwu LGA, and also in Ezere and Acha in Isuikwuato LGA. The commissioner said the Abam project has reached its second phase, which covers four communities. Meanwhile, the Ohafia project is almost complete.
He added that power restoration for Nsulu in Isiala Ngwa North LGA and parts of Ukwa East LGA will start in two weeks.
In addition, he noted that the state is working on deploying renewable energy to Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across Abia. The government has set a new standard that all working PHCs should use renewable energy.
Addressing Vandalism of Power Assets
The commissioner expressed worry about the vandalism of power assets and other government projects. He said such actions disrupt electricity supply and increase the financial burden on the government.
He called on traditional rulers, town union leaders, and security agencies to come up with ways to tackle this issue. He also urged communities to take responsibility for government projects.
