The Zone 2 Police Command in Onikan, Lagos, has arrested an accountant linked to a burglary in Maryland, Lagos. Property worth about ₦150 million was stolen during this incident.

Mr Olohundare Jimoh, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police for the zone, shared this news with journalists on Tuesday in Lagos.

Jimoh explained that the suspect had been on the run since July 2025. He was caught on Monday while trying to come back to Nigeria from Canada.

The arrest came after months of teamwork between the Nigeria Police Force and Interpol. Jimoh said the case started on July 11, 2025, when a burglary was reported at a house in Maryland, Lagos.

Investigations began right away, leading to the arrest of several people connected to the crime. “Those suspects were later charged to court and sent to prison,” he said.

The main suspect, who had worked as the accountant for the late property owner for 17 years, fled to Canada before he could be arrested. Jimoh noted that Interpol Nigeria was contacted on July 16, 2025, to help track him down internationally.

After months of gathering information and watching his movements, they were able to catch him when he returned to Nigeria. “The arrest shows the strong cooperation between the Nigeria Police Force and Interpol. It shows that no matter where a suspect goes after committing a crime, law enforcement can find them and bring them to justice,” he said.

The AIG mentioned that the suspect has already given statements about his role in the burglary and the involvement of others. He added that investigations are still going on to find out the full network behind the crime.

According to him, police are working to find and arrest anyone who helped with the crime, shared in the stolen goods, or knowingly received the stolen property. “We are determined to ensure that everyone linked to this crime is brought to justice. This includes those who took part directly, benefited from it, or bought and hid the stolen items,” he said.

Jimoh stated that early investigations showed that valuables worth around ₦150 million were taken from the house. The items were removed from a five-bedroom duplex, and efforts are still ongoing to recover the stolen property.

The AIG urged the public to report crimes quickly, reassuring residents that the police are committed to securing justice for victims. He said the arrest should warn that fleeing abroad will not protect criminals from being caught.

“Anyone who commits a crime in Nigeria and thinks that traveling abroad will stop their arrest is wrong. The Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with Interpol and other international agencies, will keep pursuing offenders wherever they may go,” he said.

Jimoh reaffirmed the Inspector-General of Police's commitment to improving crime prevention, investigation, and prosecution across the country. He mentioned that the force would continue to work with international partners and share intelligence to fight transnational and organized crime.

He also said that anyone found to have knowingly received or bought stolen items would face prosecution along with the main suspect.
