The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is asking for details on how seven expensive sport utility vehicles were given to youth leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The ADC says the cars, worth about ₦1 billion, show off wealth at a time when many Nigerians struggle to pay for basic needs.
In a statement on Monday, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, claimed the ruling party is more focused on its own interests than on the tough times Nigerians are facing.
“President Tinubu asks Nigerians to endure hardship while his party distributes luxury vehicles to its political operatives. Apparently, sacrifice is for ordinary Nigerians, while luxury is reserved for those working to keep the APC in power,” he said.
“The APC has found the resources to move its campaign officials around Nigeria. What it has failed to find is a convincing way to make life affordable for the Nigerians whose votes it now seeks.”
Criticism of Vehicle Donations
Mr Abdullahi also slammed the decision to give out vehicles for political campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections while many young Nigerians are still jobless.
“Seven APC youth leaders can receive luxury vehicles, but millions of young Nigerians are still waiting for the jobs, opportunities and economic relief they were promised. Is this the APC’s idea of youth empowerment?” he asked.
The ADC wants to know where the money for these vehicles came from, including if any government funds were used.
“Nigerians deserve to know who paid for these vehicles. Until that question is answered, the ruling party cannot dismiss legitimate concerns about its priorities,” Mr Abdullahi said.
Presentation of Vehicles
The issue arose after seven Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs were given to APC youth leaders as part of the preparations for the 2027 general elections.
PREMIUM TIMES reported earlier that First Lady Oluremi Tinubu confirmed the donation of vehicles to the APC youth wing to help with grassroots mobilization.
However, the actual cost of the vehicles and how they were financed have not been confirmed.
The ADC statement did not provide proof that public funds were used to buy the vehicles.
