The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, has promised to install between 11 and 15 kilowatts of solar power on every Nigerian’s roof within 11 months after he takes office if elected in 2027.
Adebayo made this promise on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time.’ He said his government would set up solar-panel manufacturing factories across Nigeria and train people in installing and maintaining solar power systems.
“I promise that between 11 to 15 kilowatts of solar power will be put on every roof within 11 months,” he said.
Adebayo explained that he had advised the government on power issues in the past. He also shared that he had tried solar technology in his hometown, where he trained around 2,000 people.
“I did an experiment in my hometown. I have about 2,000 people I trained on solar, because I manufacture the solar panels myself. I do lithium battery.
“The only thing I haven’t got the technological power to do is the inverter. So I buy the inverter. I do the solar battery,” he said.
Plans for Solar Factories
The SDP candidate stated that solar-panel factories could be built in Nigeria through partnerships with countries like China, Turkey, and India. He added that Nigerians would be trained to operate these factories.
He said the proposed solar clusters would provide electricity for everyday household needs and also create jobs.
“You put all of that, and you generate employment, and you now generate up to 32,000 megawatts from these clusters that you do. Then you forget about it. I told them that the way we are going to manage the national grid.
“National grid is a backup. In case a cluster fails, you will power from there,” Adebayo said.
Strategic Government Investments
He also mentioned that the government could make smart investments in important sectors of the economy. He pointed to the aviation and manufacturing industries as examples.
Adebayo said the government could invest in these sectors through operating and maintenance contracts, rather than leaving everything to private companies.
On electricity generation, Adebayo said his government would focus on refining oil domestically and tackling crude oil theft. He identified these as key issues affecting energy security and economic growth.
He claimed that as much as 900,000 barrels of crude oil are still being stolen. He added that recovering this oil would help ensure enough supply without needing extra government spending.
Adebayo also argued that if the government invests in areas like electricity and education, it could create jobs. Workers in these areas would earn money, which would benefit the economy.
