The Africans for Africa (AFA) Initiative has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with KNY Chemicals from Tanzania. This partnership aims to support responsible and sustainable management of mining waste across Africa.

The agreement was signed after the fifth African Natural Resources and Energy Investment Summit (AFNIS). The goal is to strengthen collaboration on mineral processing and promote environmentally friendly mining practices. This will also help unlock more economic value from mining waste.

In this partnership, KNY Chemicals will share its knowledge in specialized mining chemicals. AFA will use its investment platform to back the development of important mining infrastructure and mineral processing projects across Africa.

The partners plan to focus first on tailings management projects in East Africa. They want to turn mining waste into valuable resources while also reducing the negative environmental effects of mining.

AFA Co-founder Suleiman Zakari spoke about the partnership. He said it shows the organization’s dedication to building strong regional partnerships to support Africa’s industrial growth. He described KNY Chemicals as a leader in industrial chemical expertise in East Africa. He added, "By integrating their capabilities into our ecosystem, we are creating a blueprint for efficient, circular mineral processing that spans the continent."

Zakari also mentioned, "The strength of the AFA ecosystem lies in our ability to connect leading African operators across different regions." He explained that this partnership is part of AFA’s larger plan to keep more value in Africa’s mineral sector by encouraging local processing and industrial growth.

Simon Karunditu, the finance and strategy director of KNY Chemicals, also shared his thoughts. He said the partnership opens up opportunities to use the company’s specialized mining chemicals in several African countries. He stated, "We share a common vision that Africa’s mining industry must evolve through innovation. By combining our chemical processing capabilities with AFA’s investment and technical infrastructure, we are setting a new standard for sustainable tailings management."

Karunditu added, "Partnering with the AFA Initiative offers a unique opportunity to apply our specialized mining chemical solutions on a pan-African scale."

The MoU sets up a framework for joint research and project development. This aims to find ways to use locally sourced chemical inputs for beneficiation. The partners believe this approach will help deepen local value addition and reduce reliance on imported processing solutions.

Mining tailings are the waste left after extracting minerals. They pose a growing environmental risk worldwide. Poor management of tailings can harm water resources, ecosystems, and nearby communities.

Experts in the industry see better tailings management and mineral recovery as key to sustainable mining. The AFA-KNY partnership aims to tackle these issues by promoting technologies and practices that boost mineral recovery from tailings while cutting environmental risks.

The Africans for Africa Initiative focuses on enhancing resource control and value addition across the continent. Through the AFA Mining Fund I, the organization invests in important mineral projects that align with its 51 percent Total African Benefit (TAB) model. This model prioritizes African ownership, industrialization, and long-term economic value.

KNY Chemicals, based in Tanzania, is one of East Africa’s top suppliers of mining chemicals and processing reagents. They provide chemical solutions to improve efficiency and ensure environmental standards in the mining sector.
