Enugu State Tells Roadside Traders to Leave the Streets

The Enugu State Ministry of Transport on Wednesday told roadside traders to leave the Abakpa Nike area within seven days.

The ministry also warned drivers against one-way driving. Anyone caught driving against traffic will have their vehicle taken and will need to pay a fine.

The State Commissioner for Transport, Obi Ozor, shared this warning in a statement from the ministry’s spokeswoman, Chinwendu Odumegwu, in Enugu.

Mr Ozor mentioned that the ministry is increasing efforts to educate the public.

He noted that the campaign covers major roads like Ukwu Aki, Texaco, Nowas, T-Junction, and Nkwo. Traffic violations and road blockages in these areas have been affecting traffic flow.

He added that they have been informing drivers and tricycle riders about the risks and penalties of driving against traffic. Traders need to leave the roads and other blocked areas within seven days.

Mr Ozor stressed that this current effort is mainly about education. But he warned that strict enforcement and punishment for violators will start after the grace period ends.

He urged motorists, traders, and residents to work with the state government to make Abakpa safer and easier to access.

“One-way driving is a death trap. Keep to your lane and keep the roads clear,” the commissioner warned.
