Electricity costs are going up in Nigeria. Because of this, many people are now thinking about energy efficiency when buying home appliances. This change is pushing manufacturers to create products that help cut down on power use in the long run.
This trend was clear in Lagos on Friday. TCL Electronics, a consumer electronics company, launched a new line of inverter air conditioners, smart TVs, and connected home appliances. These products are aimed at people who want to lower their electricity bills and use smarter home technology.
TCL works in over 160 markets worldwide. They also announced that SIMS Nigeria Limited will be their main distributor and after-sales partner in Nigeria.
Changing consumer habits
People in the industry say that higher electricity tariffs are changing how Nigerians buy household appliances. Many buyers are now looking at more than just the price tag. They want to know about the long-term costs of using the appliances.
Ik Eyisi, Managing Director of SIMS Nigeria Limited, spoke at the launch. He said that energy efficiency is now a key factor for buyers.
"The consumer electronics industry is experiencing a change in buying habits. Higher energy costs are making households focus on energy-efficient appliances instead of regular models.
"The cost of energy has risen a lot, both in Nigeria and around the world. Consumers are looking past the initial price to see the long-term costs of owning home appliances."
Focus on energy-saving products
Some of the new products include inverter air conditioners. TCL claims these can cut electricity use by up to 75 percent when compared to regular cooling systems.
They also introduced a voice-control feature that works offline. This lets users control the air conditioners without needing the internet.
Daniel Ray, Director of Sales for West Africa at TCL MEABG, explained this feature. He said it was made to help with internet issues in places where access is not steady.
"We understand that internet connectivity can be a problem in many areas. The offline voice-control feature allows users to operate the air conditioner just by talking to it, without needing Wi-Fi."
The company also added to its smart home range. This includes Mini LED TVs with sound systems tuned by Bang & Olufsen, app-controlled washing machines, and a 500-litre no-frost inverter refrigerator with a water dispenser.
This launch shows a bigger change in Nigeria's electronics market. Manufacturers are now focusing more on energy efficiency, connectivity, and lower running costs as important selling points. This is especially important for households dealing with rising electricity bills.
