The Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, and his Rivers State counterpart, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, have met to discuss ways to tackle cross-border crime.
This information came in a statement from the Public Relations Officer of Akwa Ibom State Command, DSP Timfon John, in Uyo on Wednesday.
John said the meeting aimed to boost security cooperation between the two states. They want to work together to fight crimes that cross state lines.
The statement said, "This historic meeting shows the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to improve collaboration between commands. The focus is on intelligence-led policing and coordinated strategies to tackle crimes that cross state borders."
During the meeting, both police commissioners looked at the current security situation along their shared border. They discussed new threats and how to improve cooperation.
They talked about better sharing of real-time information, aligning crime prevention efforts, coordinating tactical operations, and improving response times. They also want to ensure good communication between police officers in both states.
The two commissioners know that criminals often take advantage of state borders to escape the law. They agreed to work together to deny these criminals safe places by conducting joint operations. This includes coordinated patrols, stop-and-search exercises, intelligence-led raids, and ongoing surveillance of key areas.
They also agreed to strengthen their fight against armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, sea piracy, illegal arms trafficking, human trafficking, pipeline vandalism, and other serious crimes that threaten peace and security in both states.
The commissioners decided to have regular meetings to review their security strategies. They want to exchange useful information and respond quickly to new security challenges.
This teamwork is expected to improve public safety, speed up responses to crime, and build trust in the Nigeria Police Force’s ability to protect lives and property.
They reminded the public that security is everyone's job. They promised to do everything possible to break down criminal networks operating between the two states. They plan to use intelligence-driven policing and professionalism to achieve this.
The commissioners reaffirmed that the Nigeria Police Force is united and committed to following the Inspector-General of Police’s guidelines on cooperation, proactive policing, intelligence-led operations, and community-focused security.
They urged the people of Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, especially those living in border areas, to continue supporting the police. They should stay alert and provide timely information to help stop crime and catch criminals.
The police assured everyone that any information received would be kept confidential and handled professionally.
