Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has praised Japan's Zion Suzuki after the 23-year-old had a strong game. He helped Japan earn a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group F opener at Dallas Stadium, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
During his halftime analysis on SuperSport, Akpeyi said Suzuki showed why the Japan coaching staff chose him over more experienced goalkeepers.
"I want to give credit to the goalkeeper. This tells why he was chosen in goal ahead of the older ones on the bench because he has been able to concentrate on the game," Akpeyi said.
"So far, he has been alert and waiting to see the loose balls with strong hands as well. It shows that he has kept his team in the game."
Suzuki, who has a Ghanaian father and a Japanese mother, made four crucial saves in the match. He was a key part of Japan's strong defense.
His quick reaction to deny Donyell Malen just minutes into the game set the tone. He stayed calm and well-positioned throughout the match, facing a tough Dutch attack.
Japan came back from behind twice to secure their draw. Virgil van Dijk scored first with a powerful header. Keito Nakamura equalized with a strong shot into the bottom corner. Crysencio Summerville put the Netherlands back in front, but Daichi Kamada scored a dramatic equalizer in the 89th minute.
At the other end, Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen had a tough night. He received a low player rating of three out of ten from Sports Mole after he pushed a weak shot into his own net for Japan's late equalizer. This moment highlighted the difference between his performance and Suzuki's steady display.
Ryan Gravenberch was the standout player for the Dutch team. He received an eight out of ten for his solid midfield play, which included assists for both Netherlands goals.
The result left Group F in a tight spot. Japan sits in second place, just behind leaders Sweden after the first round of matches.
