Franco Baresi, the former captain of AC Milan and Italian football star, has died at the age of 66. Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano shared the news on X on Friday.
Baresi played his entire career at AC Milan, showing his skills in over 700 matches from 1977 to 1997. He won six Serie A titles, three European Cups, four Italian Super Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups during his time with the club. Baresi became known as one of the greatest defenders in football history.
“Sad news from Italy as Franco Baresi has passed away this morning at 66 years old.
“An absolute legend of the game with AC Milan and Italy, marking an era for different generations.
“Thoughts and prayers with the family and friends.
“Rest in peace, Franco,” Romano wrote on X.
On the international level, Baresi earned 81 caps for the Italian national team. He was part of the squad that won the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Later, he led the Azzurri to the 1994 FIFA World Cup final, where Italy lost to Brazil in a penalty shootout.
Tributes have started coming in from all over the football world. Clubs, former teammates, players, and fans are remembering Baresi for his achievements on the field and his humble nature off it.
He is survived by his family. The football community is in mourning for a player considered one of the best defenders the game has ever seen.
