The Vice Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has accused President Bola Tinubu's government of causing his mother's death. He said the poor economy made it hard for him to buy the drugs she needed.
Amaechi, who is a former governor of Rivers State and a former Minister of Transportation, spoke on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
His mother, Ezinne Amaechi, passed away on 16 July at the age of 89.
"Tinubu’s policies killed my mother. Before Tinubu came, my mother was healthy. After 2023, it was difficult for me to buy drugs for my mother," he said.
Amaechi has often criticized the Tinubu government for the high cost of living. He especially mentioned the removal of the petrol subsidy and how it has affected Nigerians.
His remarks came a day after President Tinubu defended his reforms in his Independence Day speech. The president claimed these changes would fix problems in the economy and eventually lead to better living conditions for Nigerians.
Amaechi also challenged the president about petrol prices. He said he would leave his role as running mate to ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar to support Tinubu if petrol prices dropped to N600 per litre.
"Tomorrow, if you are doubtful, come with your camera in the morning and I will go to a filling station and I will buy fuel. If it comes down to N600, I, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, will withdraw as the vice presidential candidate of Atiku and campaign for President Tinubu," he said.
He insisted that this test would be simple and that he would check the price at a filling station himself.
Amaechi also spoke about the 2027 presidential election, saying it presents a serious choice for Nigerians. He stated, "Tinubu represents the choice of death."
