The Allied Peoples Movement has said that the comments from the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, about the economic troubles in the country show that President Bola Tinubu's government has failed.
In a statement released on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the APM criticized actions like the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira. They claim these steps have made life harder for businesses and families across Nigeria.
Bagudu spoke at the Federal Appointees Strategic Summit in Abuja on Wednesday. He admitted the government did not fully understand the economic problems that followed its reforms.
The APM responded by saying Bagudu’s remarks confirmed their previous worries about the government’s policies. The statement said, “It is indeed irresponsible and unpardonable for a government to arrogantly embark on far-reaching economic policies without adequately assessing their damaging consequences on citizens.
“From the start, well-meaning Nigerians warned that suddenly removing the subsidy on fuel, floating the naira, imposing harsh taxes, and other policies against production would lead to severe hardship for the people. Instead of listening to reason, the Tinubu administration went on a path of pride and self-importance that ultimately harmed the economy and hurt the productive sector. The result is millions of our people struggling in multi-dimensional poverty.
“Because of President Tinubu’s policies, many multinational companies have left Nigeria. Millions of businesses that supported families have shut down. The cost of living has shot up, unemployment is high, with over 60% of Nigerians unable to afford daily meals, medications, and other essentials while corruption and stealing in government continue.”
The APM called on President Bola Tinubu to accept responsibility for the struggles Nigerians face, apologize to the citizens, and step back from the 2027 presidential race.
They said, “Now that the administration has admitted it has failed and is responsible for the suffering of the citizens, President Tinubu should take responsibility, apologize to Nigerians and quit the 2027 Presidential race, as he has not shown the ability to run an effective and productive government.
“Bagudu’s admission confirms that Nigeria needs a major reset from the situation it has fallen into because of the All Progressives Congress government. Nigeria deserves a leader with a clear plan and the vision needed to manage the country and ensure the well-being of all citizens.
“This is why Nigerians are looking towards the APM’s presidential candidate, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, who has a plan for a people-centered and development-focused government with a clear path for solving Nigeria’s economic and security problems while shielding citizens from unnecessary hardship.”
The party mentioned that Nigeria should aim to replicate what they called Makinde’s successes in Oyo State, including the state’s economic growth.
They also urged Nigerians to support Makinde and rally for his candidacy ahead of the presidential election on January 16, 2027.
