Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has explained why his government picked Electric Vehicles (EVs) instead of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses. He believes that EVs are a step forward in transportation technology.
Otti shared this during his monthly media briefing in October. The event took place at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia on Friday night.
He mentioned that even though the government prefers electric buses, they still support adding more CNG stations in the state. "We are not opposed to CNG, but we chose electric vehicles for our public transportation system," the governor said.
Otti pointed out that both petrol and CNG vehicles use internal combustion engines. In contrast, EVs use a different type of propulsion system. He added that some companies are interested in setting up more CNG stations in Abia and that deals have been made with them.
The governor clarified that these new stations would serve privately owned vehicles and other users, not just the public transportation system.
Otti also noted that using CNG is cheaper than petrol. He is hopeful that more people will switch from petrol and diesel vehicles to CNG in Nigeria. He stated that local companies are good at converting internal combustion engine vehicles to CNG.
