World record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, feels she was nearly at her best during the Rabat Diamond League on Sunday. There, she set a new meeting record and grabbed her first win in the series this season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Nigerian athlete broke her own meeting record with a time of 12.28 seconds, matching the season's best she had previously set this year.
After finishing second at the Xiamen Diamond League, Amusan improved her performance in Rabat. She crossed the finish line ahead of Devynne Charlton, who came second in 12.40 seconds, while Nadine Visser took third place in 12.47 seconds.
Amusan’s winning time of 12.28 seconds is the joint-third fastest of her career. Her world record of 12.12 seconds, achieved at the 2022 World Championships in Oregon, remains her best time, followed by the 12.24 seconds she ran at the Meeting de Paris last year.
This new meeting record adds to her steady progress this season. Amusan expressed her happiness about the win, saying, "I am really pleased with the result. To be honest, I felt like I executed the race close to the best of my ability. Winning was the main objective and a Meeting Record is a fantastic bonus."
She also shared her thoughts on the crowd. "The atmosphere in Rabat is incredible and the crowd was absolutely electrifying. I have competed here several times and the support is always special. Looking ahead, my focus is to stay healthy for the upcoming events and continue performing at the highest level."
Amusan kicked off the Diamond League season after winning her fourth consecutive African title. She has been getting better with each race as she prepares for the Diamond League finale and the Commonwealth Games later this year.
As a three-time Diamond League champion in 2021, 2022, and 2023, she aims to reclaim the title this season.
