Law Mefor, Anambra's Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, has asked the federal government to ensure that Anambra gets its fair share from the country's oil and gas programs.
He pointed out that even though Anambra is an oil-producing state, it has not been fully included in Nigeria's oil and gas plans.
Mefor made the comments in Awka on Thursday during the opening of a one-day workshop on Nigerian Content capacity building for media stakeholders.
The workshop was organized by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB).
Mr Mefor praised the organizers for choosing Anambra for the workshop.
He mentioned that Nigeria has the skilled workers needed to effectively manage its oil and gas resources.
Earlier, Felix Ogbe, the Executive Secretary of NCDMB, stated that the workshop is part of the federal government’s efforts to include everyone in the industry.
Ogbe, who was represented by Omomehin Ajimijaye, the director of planning, research, and statistics, asked the media to educate communities on the importance of engaging with the board’s initiatives.
Obinna Ezeobi, the General Manager of Corporate Communications at NCDMB, encouraged the media to raise awareness about the opportunities available in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
He also urged the media to hold industry operators accountable, especially in following local content rules.
Ezeobi stressed the need for better reporting on Nigerian content issues to help more locals and businesses in Anambra get involved in the oil and gas value chain.
He said the media plays a key role in pushing for the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act.
According to him, they can achieve this by informing the public about industry opportunities, explaining government actions, and monitoring compliance with laws.
He asked journalists to use their influence to spotlight issues affecting the industry and to showcase opportunities for Nigerian businesses and professionals.
He also called on them to ensure that oil and gas operators fulfill their local content obligations.
Ezeobi mentioned that the workshop aimed to enhance journalists’ understanding of the Nigerian content framework.
He said it was also designed to improve the quality of their reports and strengthen the relationship between the board and media organizations in Anambra.
He noted that Anambra is a significant location for this engagement, as it is recognized as an oil-producing state and ranks as the second-highest oil producer in the South-east.
