The Anambra State Government has announced plans to include special lanes for bicycle riders in road designs across the state.

Eddy Ibuzo, the state commissioner for Transport, shared this news during an interview with journalists in Awka on Friday.

Mr Ibuzo explained that this move aims to promote bicycles as a key means of transportation and improve the safety of riders.

He emphasized that all road users, including pedestrians, deserve safety and should be considered in road designs.

The commissioner mentioned he will work with the ministry of works to ensure that bicycle lanes and walkways are part of road designs and included in contract agreements.

Mr Ibuzo noted that using bicycles for transport is common in many developed countries, highlighting its health and economic benefits.

He stated that this initiative aligns with Governor Charles Soludo’s plan for sustainable development in the state.

"Personally, I am worried that most of our roads in the past do not have bicycle riders in mind when they are being designed and constructed."

He pointed out that in Europe, parts of Asia, and some African countries, bicycle transport gets special attention and is widely used.

"Part of the policy of this administration is to ensure that every road user, including motorists, bicycle riders, and pedestrians, is accommodated because they are all part of transport."

Mr Ibuzo called on contractors in the state to include bicycle lanes and walkways in their designs. He believes this will help tackle traffic and safety issues.

He also took the opportunity to remind the public that the collection of transport union levies in Anambra is still banned. He encouraged anyone with information about such exploitation to report it to his office for action.
