Ebonyi Police Arrest 699 Suspects and Seize Firearms

The police in Ebonyi State, located in Nigeria’s southeast, have arrested 699 suspects linked to 372 cases since April 2026.

The Commissioner of Police, Hope Okafor, shared this update on Thursday during a press conference in Abakaliki. She highlighted the command’s operational successes.

Mrs Okafor mentioned that among those arrested, there are 660 men and 39 women. Out of these, 309 suspects face charges in court related to 162 cases. Investigations into the other cases are still ongoing.

“The command recovered 31 assorted firearms, 33 rounds of ammunition of different calibres, and three vehicles,” she said.

Increased Surveillance and Intelligence

The police commissioner noted that the command has increased surveillance and intelligence efforts around specific hotspots in the state.

“We have deployed personnel strategically to these locations to prevent any breaches of peace and ensure the safety of residents.

“These strategies have helped to significantly reduce the number of violent incidents in the state,” she stated.

Mrs Okafor also warned those engaging in criminal activities. She said there will be no safe haven for people involved in kidnapping, murder, and other violent crimes in Ebonyi State.

She added, “The command will continue to use intelligence-led policing and ongoing operations to identify, arrest, and prosecute criminal elements in the state.”
