The Anambra State Government on Friday charged eight pastors in a High Court at Awka. They are accused of breaking the state’s Homeland Security Law, 2025.
The pastors are Peter Chukwu, Chinedu Egwuonwu, Emeka Nwankpa, Ebele Nnachukwu, Ekeleme Chris Ugochukwu, Ndubisi Nnachukwu, Miracle Iruoma, and Chukwukadibia Ogwuama.
The state security group, Agunechemba, brought them to court. Ken Emeakayi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, led the operatives.
The prosecution is led by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke (SAN).
Court proceedings began at the time of this report.
This arraignment is part of the state government's effort to crack down on what it calls fake pastors, native doctors, and spiritualists. These people are accused of being involved in actions that encourage crime.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo previously said that many suspects are in custody due to the enforcement of the Homeland Security Law. He mentioned this during a visit to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Awka in May.
Soludo stated that the government is focusing on those exploiting the public under the cover of religion. He said, "The state has commenced an ongoing crackdown on fake pastors who exploit the vulnerable by preaching the gospel of salvation without the cross. As I speak now, several of them are already in custody and confessing."
