The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Surajudeen Basiru, has urged Nigerian women abroad to support President Bola Tinubu’s reforms and the ruling party as the 2027 elections approach.
Basiru said the APC is focused on creating more opportunities for women in the party and in governance. He highlighted gender inclusion as a key part of the party's political approach.
He made this statement while speaking at the APC Diaspora/Global Women Summit 2026 in Rome, Italy. His speech was titled, “From Renewed Hope to Lasting Impact: Diaspora Women Advancing Impact Continuity.”
A copy of his speech was shared with our correspondent on Sunday. The summit gathered APC women leaders and members from around the world.
He mentioned that Nigerian women in the diaspora are important assets for the country. They excel in areas like academics, medicine, law, engineering, entrepreneurship, finance, technology, and public service.
Basiru added that these women are also active in Nigeria’s economy. They contribute through investments, remittances, philanthropy, skills transfer, and advocacy. Their successes abroad show the great potential of Nigerian women when given the chance.
He said, “The APC acknowledges that diaspora women are not mere supporters of government programmes but strategic partners in the realisation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“You are ambassadors of Nigeria, promoting our democratic values and serving as a bridge between Nigeria and the international community. Your international connections, technical know-how, financial resources and policy insights can contribute immensely to national development.”
As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections, Basiru called on women to engage in civic activities, fight misinformation, support democracy, mentor younger women, and help the party connect globally.
He said, “As a party, we are committed to increasing opportunities for women within the structures of the party and in public governance. We believe inclusive leadership achieves better governance outcomes.
“The party will, therefore, continue to encourage the participation of women in political leadership, policy formulation, party administration, electoral mobilisation and democratic governance at all levels.
“We also recognise the need to strengthen the party’s collaboration with our diaspora chapters by creating more structured platforms for engagement, knowledge sharing, policy dialogue, investment promotion and leadership development. Your ideas, experiences and constructive contributions are invaluable as we continue to build a stronger, more responsive political party.”
Basiru also spoke about Tinubu's achievements. He said the tough decision to end the fuel subsidy has allowed more investment in infrastructure and social projects. He noted that crude oil production has risen to over 1.7 million barrels per day, which helps government revenue and boosts investor confidence.
He mentioned that the Tinubu administration has pushed for local government financial independence following a key Supreme Court ruling. They have also started discussions on creating state police as part of broader constitutional and security changes.
The senator pointed out that the administration has launched major infrastructure projects. These include the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Lagos-Sokoto Super Highway, and the reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road. These projects aim to improve connectivity, increase trade, and support regional growth.
Basiru also said that Nigeria’s foreign reserves have surpassed $51 billion under Tinubu. This is the highest level in 17 years.
He concluded by noting that many women in Tinubu’s government have greatly contributed to the success of the Renewed Hope Agenda. He urged women living abroad to support the continuation of the APC-led government beyond 2027.
