Nigeria forward Amy Okonkwo has signed a contract with WNBA team Portland Fire for the rest of the season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The D’Tigress captain comes back to the WNBA after playing with the Atlanta Dream and Dallas Wings. She made a mark off the bench, scoring a career-high 20 points against the Phoenix Mercury in September 2025.

Okonkwo is joining Portland as a replacement player due to the WNBA’s Season-Ending Injury Exception. This follows a series of injuries to the team, including Sarah Ashlee Barker, who has a season-ending ACL injury.

She first joined Dallas on a seven-day hardship contract in August 2025. After impressing during her time with the Wings, she got a contract for the rest of the season.

Okonkwo returned to the Wings for their 2026 training camp before moving to Atlanta on a development contract in May. She made nine appearances, with one start, in her two WNBA stints.

The back-to-back AfroBasket Most Valuable Player comes to Portland after leading Nigeria to their fifth straight FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. This win gave her a third continental crown. She was named MVP for the second time in a row, having also won it in 2023. Okonkwo recently joined the D’Tigress squad as they prepare for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

Okonkwo began her college career at the University of Southern California. She later transferred to Texas Christian University, where she received All-Big 12 Second Team honors in 2018 and 2019.

The forward joined the Fire for practice at the Moda Center on Tuesday. Portland is getting ready to face the Minnesota Lynx.
