APC Wins All Seats in Ebonyi Local Elections as Other Parties Pull Out

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured all 13 chairmanship and 171 councillorship seats in the local government elections held on 22 August in Ebonyi State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no other political party took part in these council elections.

Patrick Enyi, the chairman of the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), announced the results in Abakaliki on Sunday. He confirmed that APC candidates won all the available seats.

The chairmen-elect include Osborne Umahi, who is the son of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for Ohaozara Local Government Area. Other chairmen-elect are Peace Agwu for Ishielu, Paul Ituma for Ohaukwu, Friday Nwuhuo for Ezza North, Chinedu Mkpuma for Ezza South, Chidi Nwode for Ikwo, Timothy Nwachi for Afikpo North, and Ikechukwu Ogbofia for Onicha.

The list continues with Michael Anyim for Ivo, Simeon Onuoha for Edda, Helen Aduga for Izzi, Chidiebere Alo for Abakaliki, and Chibueze Odigwe for Ebonyi.

Mr Enyi stated that all the APC candidates emerged as winners in their constituencies and have been officially declared as chairmen and councillors. He described the elections as peaceful, free, and fair, and offered his congratulations to the winners.

NAN also reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance in Ebonyi have rejected the election results. They called the process a “mono-party poll” that allegedly ignored existing court judgments.

Darlington Onwe, the PDP spokesman in Ebonyi, stated that the party sees this exercise as “not an election at all.” Mr Onwe accused EBSIEC and the state government of not allowing true participation from all registered political parties.

He claimed that the election was unconstitutional and could not give legitimacy to any candidate who came out of it.
