APGA wins all local government seats in Anambra elections

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has won all the chairmanship and councillorship positions in the local government elections held on August 29, 2026, in Anambra State.

Genevieve Osakwe, the Chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), announced the results at their office in Awka on Sunday.

Osakwe said APGA secured all 21 chairmanship seats. Candidates from the party also won the councillorship positions in all 21 local government areas, as declared at the ward level.

She described the election as peaceful and fair. Osakwe assured that the commission carefully collated and analyzed the results to avoid any mistakes.

While APGA was the only party to field candidates in 20 out of the 21 LGAs, the Young Progressives Party (YPP) had candidates only in Anambra East LGA. No other opposition parties participated in the elections.

None of the opposition candidates or their agents were present at the ANSIEC office when the results were announced.

Osakwe listed the scores and names of the APGA candidates, declaring them winners based on the highest number of votes.

She stated, “All the candidates of APGA have been officially declared winners as Councilors and Executive Council Chairmen-elects.

“The elections took place across 362 electoral wards and 21 local government areas in Anambra State. It was conducted peacefully, freely, fairly, transparently, and credibly, following state electoral laws and guidelines.”

Osakwe praised the people of Anambra State for coming out in large numbers to exercise their civic rights. She also thanked security agencies for maintaining peace and order during the election.

She said, “This is to affirm the result of the chairmanship and councilorship election held on August 29, 2026. The commission carefully collated and analyzed the results to ensure that there were no mistakes.

“The election held at all the polling units across Anambra State on August 29, and it was free, fair, and credible.”

Our correspondent noted that besides some officials and party agents from APGA, no representatives from other political parties were present at the ANSIEC office when the results were announced on Sunday.
