The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won all 17 local government chairmanship seats in the council election held on Saturday in Enugu State.
Christian Ngwu, the Chairman of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), announced the results at the commission's headquarters in Enugu on Sunday.
Mr Ngwu, who is a professor, also revealed that APC candidates won all 260 councillorship seats in the state.
According to the results shared by Mr Ngwu, Ugochukwu Nwanjoku won in Aninri LGA. Uchenna Okolo was declared the winner for Awgu LGA, while Beloved-Dan Anike clinched victory for Enugu East LGA.
In Enugu North LGA, Ibenaku Onoh was named the winner. Caleb Ani won in Enugu South LGA, and Vitalis Ngwu emerged victorious in Ezeagu LGA.
Other winners include Martin Amadieze (Igbo Etiti LGA), Chris Simon (Igbo Eze North LGA), Ferdinand Ukwueze (Igbo Eze South LGA), Brendan Ani (Isi-Uzo), and Mike Ogbuekwe (Nkanu East LGA).
John Ogbodo won in Nkanu West LGA, Jude Asogwa took Nsukka LGA, while Greg Anyaegbudike won in Oji River LGA. Innocent Ezeoha was declared the winner in Udenu LGA.
The winning streak continued in Udi LGA, where Hyginus Agu emerged the winner, and Chijioke Ezeukwu won in Uzo-Uwani LGA.
A review by PREMIUM TIMES of the 17 chairpersons-elect shows that 12 of them were re-elected for a second term. Five others were elected for the first time.
The re-elected chairpersons are: Mr Anike (Enugu East LGA), Mr Ukwueze (Igbo Eze South LGA), Mr Nwanjoku (Aninri LGA), Mr Okolo (Awgu LGA), Mr Onoh (Enugu North LGA), Mr Ani (Enugu South LGA), and Mr Ngwu (Ezeagu LGA).
Others include Mr Ogbodo (Nkanu West LGA), Mr Asogwa (Nsukka LGA), Mr Anyaegbudike (Oji River LGA), Mr Agu (Udi LGA), and Mr Ezeukwu (Uzo-Uwani LGA).
The new winners for the first time are: Mr Amadieze (Igbo-Etiti LGA), Mr Simon (Igbo-Eze North LGA), Mr Ani (Isi-Uzo LGA), Mr Ogbuekwe (Nkanu East LGA), and Mr Ezeoha (Udenu LGA).
Mr Ngwu praised the people of Enugu State for their participation in the elections while announcing the results.
He emphasized that the citizens' involvement made the electoral process meaningful. He also thanked the security agencies, civil society organizations, and the media for their roles in the successful conduct of the elections. He congratulated the newly elected chairpersons and urged them to see their victories as a call to serve the people in their local government areas.
He then issued certificates of return to the 17 newly elected council chairpersons.
