Argentina's football association said on Saturday that it has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. This is over the penalties FIFA gave them linked to events during the World Cup final.
Midfielder Leandro Paredes faced the toughest punishment. He received a 10-game ban and a $90,000 fine for his actions during the match against Spain.
Paredes grabbed Eric Garcia by the throat and took down Gavi while holding his substitute bib. This led to more trouble on the pitch after Spain won 1-0 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19.
The AFA was fined $321,000 for breaking FIFA’s rules. These included using a sports event for non-sporting demonstrations, team misconduct, and discriminatory chants and gestures from its fans.
Nahuel Molina and Thiago Almada also received bans and fines. Roberto Ayala, who is part of Argentina’s coaching team, was punished as well.
In a statement, the AFA said FIFA's appeals body turned down their complaint about the penalties on Paredes and the association. However, they did reduce Molina’s punishment from a seven-match ban and a $60,000 fine.
The AFA also announced that it will take its appeals against both its own and Paredes’s penalties to CAS.
