Tolu Arokodare says he is ready to prioritize Ajax’s goals over his wish for regular playtime. He made a strong start on his competitive debut for the Dutch team, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Super Eagles striker came off the bench and provided an assist as Ajax kicked off their Eredivisie campaign with a 2-0 win against PEC Zwolle on Sunday.
Arokodare joined Ajax on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers last month. The Dutch club has the option to buy him permanently. The 25-year-old previously shone at Belgian club Genk, where he was the top scorer in the Jupiler Pro League for the 2024/25 season.
Before joining Ajax, the Nigerian said technical director Jordi Cruijff explained the club's plans to him. “He told me about the team he wants to build, and we can already see it. I really liked it, and I am ready to chase our dreams,” Arokodare said.
“I want to become champions and win every competition we take part in.” Ajax finished fifth in the Eredivisie last season and are rebuilding under Cruijff, with Arokodare being one of the new attacking players.
The Nigerian knows that there will be tough competition for spots after Ajax’s summer signings. But he promises to stay committed no matter what his role is. “Of course, I want to start every game and play as much as possible,” he said. “But sometimes there are things that are bigger than the wishes of an individual player.
“Sometimes the team comes first, sometimes there are tactical decisions, and sometimes there may be physical reasons. You never know,” he said. The striker added that his main goal is to make a difference whenever he is called to play.
“I was allowed to come on, I helped the team, and we won. If I have to do that for the whole season, I will do my best. If I am allowed to start, I will also do my best.”
He also has clear personal goals for the season. “I just want to win matches and score goals. I think every striker wants that,” Arokodare said.
