Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has told his team to expect a tough match against Lille in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League game. He explained that he chooses his starting players based on who he thinks will finish the match strong.

Arteta said Lille, managed by Davide, are a well-organized team and have troubled big clubs before. He urged Arsenal to be ready for a tough game at the Emirates Stadium.

At his pre-match press conference on Monday, as reported in “Every word from Mikel Arteta’s pre-Lille presser” on Arsenal’s official website, the Spaniard praised Lille’s planning and competitiveness.

“What Davide has done is remarkable. You can see the way they compete and play, and the problems they create for big teams. Tomorrow will not be different unless we are ready for it,” Arteta said.

Arteta also shared that his team selection depends on how he thinks the match will unfold, including the need for substitutes to step up during key moments.

When asked what matters most when picking his starting XI, Arteta mentioned that he sometimes chooses players based on their ability to influence the game’s final moments.

“Sometimes I pick a team or players based on what I expect, especially at the start, that can finish the game. Most matches are decided at this level in those moments, and we have the bench and players who can do that. We will definitely use that resource,” he said.

The Spaniard reminded his players that they must work hard to reach another Champions League final after losing in the last season's final.

Arteta emphasized that the team needs to understand how hard it is to reach that level again and earn another shot at the trophy.

“You have to earn the right to get back in that position. We know how tough it is and how many times we’ve done it in the history of our club. So first, realize that, and tomorrow we will face a really tough opponent,” he said.

He repeated that Lille will be a serious test, praising their coach and the challenges they have posed to other top teams.

Arsenal will meet Lille on Tuesday as they continue their Champions League journey, with Arteta pushing his players to prepare for a hard match.
