Nigerian footballers will be in the spotlight this week in the UEFA Champions League. Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman are set to face tough opponents as the league moves into its second matchday.
Osimhen’s Galatasaray will host Barcelona at RAMS Park on Tuesday. Lookman and Atlético Madrid will take on Manchester United at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. In another match, Christian Nwachukwu’s Sabah will go up against Slavia Prague, who have four Nigerians in their team. Meanwhile, Moses Usor’s LASK will face Liverpool on Wednesday.
Raphael Onyedika and Zaidu Sanusi are also part of the wider Nigerian group. However, Sanusi is reportedly not available for Porto’s match against Real Betis.
None of the Nigerian players who played in the first matchday managed to win. There is plenty at stake as they hope to improve their performances in Europe’s top club competition.
Osimhen Ready for Barcelona After Injury Boost
Victor Osimhen is expected to be a key player when Galatasaray takes on Barcelona in one of Tuesday’s big matches.
The Turkish champions are looking to bounce back from a 3-1 defeat to Sporting CP in their first Champions League game. Barcelona, on the other hand, comes to Istanbul after a 5-1 win against Feyenoord and a 3-0 victory over Getafe in La Liga.
Barcelona has had a great start to the season, winning all nine of their matches so far. This makes Osimhen’s return to the starting lineup very important for Galatasaray.
The 27-year-old has scored six goals and made three assists in five league games this season. He returned from a groin injury last Friday, coming off the bench to assist Mario Lemina’s stoppage-time goal in Galatasaray’s 3-1 win over Kasimpasa.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick sees Osimhen as a threat, praising both him and Galatasaray’s team before the match.
“Galatasaray have a fantastic striker like Osimhen; they really have a great squad,” Flick said.
Osimhen knows the challenge ahead but is excited to face one of Europe’s top teams.
“Barcelona is a very big team. You shouldn’t be happy about playing against them, because they have very quality players,” he said, according to Futbol Arena.
“It will help us both collectively and individually. I’m happy for matches like this. It will be a great match.”
Osimhen has scored against Barcelona before, netting for Napoli in a 1-1 draw during the first leg of their 2024 Champions League round-of-16 match. Napoli lost the second leg 3-1 and got eliminated.
Historically, Galatasaray has not done well against Barcelona, winning just one of their eight Champions League matches. They have two draws and five losses.
Osimhen hopes he is fit enough to lead the attack and help Galatasaray get a result to revive their European campaign.
Lookman Faces Manchester United Challenge
Ademola Lookman is looking at a tough challenge as Atlético Madrid hosts Manchester United on Tuesday. The match is set to kick off at 8:00 pm Nigerian time.
Atlético lost 2-1 to Liverpool in their first match but has bounced back with four wins in a row across competitions. In contrast, United started their European journey strong with a 4-0 win against Sabah but have struggled since.
Lookman has scored once in nine games this season and might have to sit on the bench, with Julián Álvarez and Giuliano Simeone likely to lead Atlético’s attack.
Manager Diego Simeone noted that Lookman has not yet found his best form but encouraged him to stay confident and take risks.
“Lookman isn’t playing the way he wants to, and we want to see him, but he works every day trying to get back to that form,” Simeone said, according to Spanish reports.
“He’s a good dribbler; we need him to be, to lose the ball, to keep trying.”
These comments highlight the challenge Lookman faces as he works to secure his place in Atlético’s attack. His skill to beat defenders and create chances could be key against United, especially if the match opens up.
Lookman has scored against United before while playing for Everton in a 2-1 Premier League loss in January 2021. He now hopes to have a bigger impact in the Champions League, whether starting or coming off the bench.
Nwachukwu Leads Nigerian Interest in Sabah vs Slavia Prague
The match between Sabah and Slavia Prague also has an interesting Nigerian twist. Christian Nwachukwu plays for the Azerbaijani team against four Nigerians in the Czech side.
Nwachukwu’s Sabah lost 4-0 to Manchester United in their first Champions League match and will be eager to perform better in front of their fans.
The 20-year-old forward aims to make a mark in the competition. However, Sabah faces a Slavia team also looking for their first points after losing 3-2 to Lens.
Slavia’s Nigerian players include Mubarak Suleiman, Emmanuel Ayaosi, David Moses, and Samuel Isife. Their presence makes the match more exciting, with several Nigerians potentially on opposite sides.
Nwachukwu’s job is to help Sabah bounce back from their poor start against United. Slavia will be hoping to convert their attacking chances into a win after their disappointing result against Lens.
With Nigerian players on both teams, this match gives one or more of them a chance to have a significant impact on their teams’ European journeys.
Usor Misses Liverpool Challenge as LASK Seeks Points
On Wednesday, LASK will face Liverpool, but Nigerian forward Moses Usor is expected to miss the game due to a shoulder injury.
Usor played for LASK in their opening Champions League match and will be disappointed to miss facing one of the biggest clubs in the competition.
Liverpool will be looking to keep their strong start after beating Atlético Madrid 2-1 in their first match.
Without Usor, LASK will miss one of their Nigerian attacking options for this match. The forward hopes to return soon after recovering from his injury.
Onyedika and Zaidu Add to Nigerian Champions League Interest
Raphael Onyedika is another Nigerian to watch this week after moving to Stuttgart. His team is set to play Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday, giving him a chance to help Stuttgart earn their first points in the league phase.
Onyedika is known for being a tough, skilled midfielder. His ability to protect the defense could be crucial in a competition where mistakes can be costly.
Zaidu Sanusi’s Porto will also play Real Betis in Spain on Wednesday. However, reports suggest that the Nigerian left-back is not available due to injury, putting his participation in doubt.
Porto lost their first Champions League match to Manchester City and will be looking to bounce back against a Betis team that won 3-2 against Lille in their opening game.
Nigerian Stars Aim to Shine
From Osimhen’s match against Barcelona to Lookman’s challenge with Manchester United, the second matchday brings several opportunities for Nigerian players to shine in the Champions League.
Attention will also be on Nwachukwu and the four Nigerians at Slavia Prague. Onyedika’s Stuttgart match and LASK’s game with Liverpool add to the excitement on Wednesday.
After a tough first round for these players, the goal is clear: deliver better performances, help their clubs earn important points, and give Nigerian football fans reasons to follow the Champions League this week.
