Nollywood actress Ashabi Simple, who is the mother of Nigerian singer Portable's children, has started her National Youth Service Corps programme at the Ogun State camp in Sagamu.
Ashabi, whose real name is Akinyanju Omobolarinde, shared the news on her Instagram on Wednesday and Friday. She expressed her happiness about finally pursuing a long-held dream.
She explained that it took her five years after finishing secondary school to start university. Then, it took her another three years after graduating to join the one-year national service programme.
"My mum once told me and my sister, ‘Mo fe ke ka iwe, mo fe ke wo aso copper.’ Those words have stuck with me every day," she wrote.
Ashabi said participating in NYSC is both a dream come true and a promise she made to herself.
"Today, I remember one reason I went to school. It was a dream, a goal, and a promise I made to myself that I must fulfil.
"And today, here I am, proudly serving my country, Nigeria! My heart is full. My joy is immeasurable. COPPER ASHABI IN THE BUILDING!" she added.
She also thanked everyone who supported her, noting that her mother's wish is now a reality.
In another Instagram post on Wednesday, Ashabi shared how grateful she was for the warm welcome at the camp. She received greetings, hugs, and even free food.
"I feel so honoured today. The way everyone embraced me at the camp, greeted me warmly, hugged me, and made me feel so welcomed. I was just smiling like, ‘Ah-ah! So celebrity don land here?’" she wrote.
She said these gestures meant a lot to her and that she appreciates the support.
Ashabi has two children with Portable, whose real name is Habeeb Okikiola Badmus. Their relationship has had public issues, including disagreements about her role in his life.
In January 2026, Ashabi and her siblings accused Portable of assault after a fight at his bar in Ogun State.
The singer was arrested and faced charges over that incident.
The arguments continued in September when Ashabi accused Portable of not providing enough financial support for their children. Portable then requested DNA tests to confirm the paternity of the children before giving more support.
