Aston Villa, a Premier League team, is thinking about taking legal action against Jamie Carragher. He is a former Liverpool player and now a football analyst. This is over comments he made about the club and its fans.
Reports from Reuters say that Villa's chairman, Nassef Sawiris, revealed this decision on Friday. He described Carragher's comments as "unacceptable insults."
This threat came after Carragher spoke on the Stick to Football podcast. He told Villa fans to "shut the f*** up" and claimed the club would "never be Manchester United."
Carragher made these statements while talking about Villa's manager, Unai Emery. There were rumors about Emery possibly moving to Manchester United due to uncertainty around Michael Carrick's job at Old Trafford.
He said, "I’m not trying to annoy Villa fans but there is a chain in football, whether you like it or not." He explained that some clubs have a higher status and can attract players and managers from others. He used Real Madrid’s signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United as an example.
Carragher pointed out that clubs lower than Aston Villa could also take their manager or players. This was when he made the controversial comment about the club’s supporters.
In a statement quoted by Reuters, Sawiris said, "Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the club and its fans." He added, "Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football."
The club did not explain the legal reasons for this action. They also did not reply right away to Reuters’ request for comment. Carragher also did not immediately respond to the news agency but later tried to ease the situation. He said his comments were meant as a joke.
He stated, "It was a joke after the stick Villa fans have given me over saying Emery may fancy joining Man Utd," in a social media post. He also shared clips of earlier comments where he praised Emery and Aston Villa. He expressed happiness about the club's win in the 2026 Europa League final in Istanbul.
Carragher insisted that his comments showed his respect for Emery, whom he sees as one of the best coaches in the Premier League.
