The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has called for a full investigation into security measures at Yola Airport. This follows videos released by PREMIUM TIMES that show Patience Abbo, wife of former Adamawa North Senator Ishaku Abbo, repeatedly entering restricted areas.
Keyamo made this decision after getting formal explanations from airport security officials. This was in response to the initial report by PREMIUM TIMES about the incident, according to information from the newspaper.
Airport security officials reportedly told the minister that Mrs Abbo informed the AVSEC staff on duty that she was traveling with her husband. Because of this, she was allowed access past the terminal gates.
The Airport Chief of Security explained that officials only realized she was not a passenger when they saw her returning alone to the terminal after sending her husband off to the aircraft steps.
But a second video, later obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, shows Mrs Abbo again with her husband on the tarmac. She was wearing a brown abaya and pulling a colorful suitcase to the foot of the aircraft staircase. This new footage suggests that the first incident was not a one-time misunderstanding.
Instead, it indicates a repeated breach of airport access rules that has been overlooked.
PREMIUM TIMES learned that this situation led to increased concern and scrutiny from the ministry. This prompted the minister to launch an investigation into how Mrs Abbo was allowed repeated access.
Questions Over Passenger Verification
The explanation from airport security has raised serious doubts about whether they are following national and international aviation safety rules.
According to Part 17 of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs), airport aprons and similar operational zones are designated as Security Restricted Areas (SRAs). Access is strictly for authorized personnel and passengers with valid travel documents.
Industry experts who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES questioned the airport officials’ reasons. They want to know why the personnel relied only on what a traveler said instead of checking their travel status with a boarding pass at the gate.
Insiders point out that this situation shows a larger problem with the “VIP culture” at domestic airports. High-profile individuals often bypass security checks, with officials sometimes helping them with their bags. Meanwhile, ordinary travelers face strict and aggressive screening.
Severe Safety Risks and Institutional Silence
The ongoing investigation will look into the actions of the Aviation Security (AVSEC) staff on duty during both incidents. It will also examine how a videographer was allowed unauthorized access to film both departures.
Abubakar Manir, who is in charge of the Crime, Intelligence, and Investigation Unit at FAAN Sokoto, previously told PREMIUM TIMES about the dangers of letting untrained civilians get too close to operational aircraft.
"There are a lot of risks associated... Some aircraft have propeller engines. Once they start the engine, a civilian might not know the safety procedure. If you are close, it can hit you," Mr Manir said during an earlier interview.
As of the time of this report, attempts to reach Mr Abbo by phone to ask about his wife's repeated breaches of airport security were unsuccessful.
