Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi is about to join his fellow Nigerian Frank Onyeka at Coventry City. The newly-promoted Premier League team is close to announcing his signing from Nottingham Forest, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano shared that Coventry City and Nottingham Forest have agreed on the transfer of Awoniyi. A medical is now in progress before his official announcement.
Awoniyi, who won the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup with Nigeria, will be the second Super Eagles player brought in by manager Frank Lampard since the team moved up to the Premier League. Onyeka joined from Brentford after last season.
Onyeka completed his permanent transfer to the CBS Arena after a good loan spell. He played 14 Championship matches, scoring one goal and providing one assist. His strong performances helped Coventry win promotion, ending a 25-year wait to return to the Premier League.
During his four years at Nottingham Forest, Awoniyi scored 23 goals and made six assists in 103 games across all competitions. Out of those goals, 21 were in the Premier League, where he played 90 matches.
The 29-year-old is now in the last year of his contract at the City Ground. He joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in 2022. Before moving to Germany, he played for Mainz 05, Royal Excel Mouscron, Gent, NEC Nijmegen, and FSV Frankfurt.
With Onyeka already settled in at the club, Awoniyi is expected to bring important experience as Coventry looks to build a team that can compete in the Premier League this season.
