Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka has joined Coventry City on a permanent deal. This follows his role in helping the team get promoted to the Premier League, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

Onyeka first came to Coventry on loan from Brentford in January. He played an important part in Frank Lampard’s team as they won the Championship.

The midfielder made 14 appearances for Coventry, scoring one goal and providing one assist.

His only goal was key, leading to a 3-2 win over Derby County in April.

At 28 years old, Onyeka brings a lot of Premier League experience. He has played 75 matches in the top league while at Brentford.

After finalizing his deal at the Coventry Building Society Arena, Onyeka shared, “I’m really excited for the new season with Coventry.

“When I first joined last season, I came here with two goals: to win the Championship and help Coventry earn promotion to the Premier League.

“I’m really happy to now be a Coventry player back in the Premier League.

“I will give everything to the team, fight for every ball, fight for my teammates and bring my experience.

“My ambition now is to help the club stay in the Premier League and finish as high as we can.”

Onyeka’s transfer will officially start on Wednesday, July 1.

He leaves Brentford after playing 87 times in all competitions since joining from Danish club Midtjylland in July 2021.

Onyeka was Brentford’s first signing in the Premier League and played regularly during his first season. The Bees ended that season in 13th place. He also played for Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations during that time.

In the 2022/23 season, Onyeka made 23 appearances and got two assists. He spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Augsburg, where he played 31 times in the Bundesliga.

Onyeka had nine appearances for Brentford in the first half of last season. He joined Coventry on loan in January, making 14 appearances and scoring once to help the Sky Blues gain promotion.

Onyeka could return to the Gtech Community Stadium with Coventry in February 2027. Brentford is set to play at the Coventry Building Society Arena for their final meeting in the 2026/27 season.
