Brentford director of football Phil Giles shared that Frank Onyeka's lack of regular playing time and Coventry City's promotion made his permanent move the best choice for everyone involved.
The Nigeria international has completed a permanent transfer to newly promoted Coventry City after helping the Sky Blues get back to the Premier League during a loan deal last season.
His contract included a buy option that was activated when Coventry returned to the top flight after winning the Championship.
Giles explained why they allowed Onyeka to leave. He praised the 28-year-old for his hard work and commitment during his five years at the club.
“Frank has been with us since our first Premier League game and has always shown fantastic commitment, work rate and loyalty during his time here,” Giles said.
“Ultimately, he probably didn’t start as many games as he’d have liked, which is why the opportunity for him to move to Coventry made sense for all parties.
“He made a big contribution to their promotion and has earned his chance at becoming a regular Premier League starter with them. Frank will always be welcome back at Brentford and we wish him well for next season with Coventry.”
Onyeka joined Brentford from Danish club FC Midtjylland in 2021. He made 87 appearances for the Bees, with 75 in the Premier League. However, he found it tough to become a regular starter. He spent the 2024/25 season on loan at FC Augsburg before moving to Coventry on another loan in January 2026.
This move was important for both the player and the club. Onyeka played 14 Championship matches, scored once, and helped Frank Lampard’s team win the league title and return to the Premier League after being away for 25 years.
His permanent transfer marks the end of a successful time in west London. It also gives the Super Eagles midfielder a chance to play regular Premier League football with Coventry next season.
