Bassey shines as Fulham captain catches Inter's eye

Calvin Bassey stood firm at Anfield on Saturday, leading Fulham’s defence to a goalless draw against Liverpool. This result gave Fulham their first point of the Premier League season. Bassey's performance showed his defensive skills, which have now attracted interest from Inter Milan, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

As the team captain, the Nigerian player played all 90 minutes. He won all three of his ground duels, made three recoveries, had one interception, and made five clearances. Bassey helped Fulham keep Liverpool from scoring throughout the match.

He received the second-highest rating on his team and the best among Fulham’s defenders that night. He completed 82 percent of his passes as Fulham held strong against a Liverpool side that started well and created chances but could not get past him.

This draw came after a tough start to the season for Alvaro Arbeloa’s team. They lost all three of their first matches, each by just one goal. They fell 3-2 to both Chelsea and Crystal Palace and lost 1-0 to Sunderland. Just before the game at Anfield, Bassey warned that Fulham faced a tough challenge against Liverpool, a team he considers among the best in the league.

“It is not going to be easy. You know what is coming when you play Liverpool, they have top players,” he said.

“It is just about doing our homework and seeing how we can hurt them. We talk with the manager about everything that might not have worked, and try and go into every game understanding more what he wants from us individually as players.”

Bassey’s calmness under pressure has been key to his career. He started in academy football before making it big. Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, he moved to England as a child and grew up in Newham, London. He joined Leicester City’s academy but spent three seasons without playing in senior football. His move to Rangers in the summer of 2020 changed everything.

Bassey played both left-back and centre-half at Rangers. He helped the Glasgow club win the Scottish Premiership by 25 points in his first season. They did not lose a single league match and allowed just 13 goals, setting a Scottish record with 26 clean sheets. He also reached the Europa League final with Rangers the next year. Although they lost on penalties, his performance against Eintracht Frankfurt earned him praise and drew attention from clubs across Europe.

Ajax signed Bassey shortly after, paying an initial €23 million for him, a record sale for Rangers. In Amsterdam, he played mainly as a centre-back, making 39 appearances in all competitions. He scored once, made five assists, and experienced Champions League football for the first time. His strong performances led Fulham to sign him in July 2023 for €21 million, making him the most expensive Nigerian defender ever.

Bassey scored his first goal for Fulham in February 2024 during a 2-1 win over Manchester United. It was Fulham’s first victory at Old Trafford since 2003. Since then, he has become one of the most reliable defenders in the Premier League. He won the club’s Player of The Season award for the 2024/25 season after being the runner-up the year before. Last season, he made 30 league appearances, bringing his total to 105 for Fulham, scoring four goals and getting one assist.

His success at club level matches his progress with the Super Eagles. He was part of the squad that won silver and bronze at the 2023 and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. At Fulham, new manager Arbeloa gave him the captaincy ahead of the current season. He took over from the injured Tom Cairney and has worn the armband in all four Premier League matches so far.

Bassey, now 26 and in his fourth season at Craven Cottage, sees the captaincy as a privilege. He said, “It is a privilege. Being able to captain this club is unbelievable.

“Going into my fourth season, I know the boys and get on with everyone, so I just be myself and try to help everyone.”

His strong performances have attracted interest from Inter Milan. Manager Cristian Chivu sees Bassey as a good fit for his system. Bassey can play as a centre-back in a back three or as a left-back. Inter needs to refresh their defence, which consists of older players. They have followed Bassey for several transfer windows and might move for him as his contract nears its end.

Bassey’s current deal with Fulham runs until the summer of 2027, with the club having an option to extend it for another year. According to TeamTalk, Fulham is preparing to discuss a new long-term contract. This move would help them if Inter comes calling.

For now, Bassey is focused on helping Fulham improve this season and leading the Super Eagles’ defence in important Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers later this month.
