Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany is likely to be away for weeks after he collapsed while watching a training session for the club’s reserve team. Sporting director Max Eberl has said there will be no rush for his return.

On Friday, the club announced that the 40-year-old Belgian needed medical care and was undergoing detailed checks in the hospital. Until further notice, Bayern said his coaching staff would handle training and match duties.

Eberl spoke at a press conference on Saturday. He mentioned that the club would allow Kompany all the time he needs to recover. He emphasized that they would not set a specific date for his return.

“Vinnie will get all the time he needs. We’re not going to start setting up any timelines. We need to figure out what it is, and then it’s about what the recovery time means. We won’t be talking about days, but about weeks. That’s clear to all of us,” he said.

Before the collapse, reports indicated that Kompany had been facing health issues.

His absence will impact Bayern’s plans as they prepare for their Bundesliga match against Freiburg on Sunday. Assistant coach Aaron Danks is expected to take charge of the team.

Eberl expressed full confidence in the coaching staff. He said the club does not plan to make any changes while Kompany focuses on his recovery.

“We have such a fantastic coaching staff, whose head is Vinnie. But the success is based on an outstanding team in the background. There’s not the slightest thought of changing anything there,” he said.

Bayern has not confirmed the exact cause of Kompany’s collapse. Eberl mentioned that the club would wait for the medical results before speculating on his health.
