Bayern Munich's sporting director Max Eberl announced on Wednesday that coach Vincent Kompany has been released from the hospital. The Belgian coach had been dealing with meningeal irritation.
Kompany was taken to the hospital after he collapsed during training in Munich last Friday. Bayern explained that he was suffering from a virus at the time.
Just before Bayern's German Cup match against Magdeburg, Eberl spoke to ARD. He shared that doctors figured out what was wrong and cleared the 40-year-old Kompany to go home.
"We have identified the cause: it is a case of meningeal irritation, which is what triggered the incident last Friday," Eberl said.
On Saturday, Bayern said it would take "weeks, not days" for Kompany to return to coaching. In his absence, English assistant coach Aaron Danks is in charge.
After a 3-1 victory at Freiburg on Sunday, Danks mentioned that they would not discuss football with Kompany while he recovers.
"He has now been allowed to go home, where he can continue his rehabilitation," Eberl explained on Wednesday.
"For him, rehabilitation means rest and medication. I am very, very confident that he will be back on the touchline at 100 percent very soon."
Eberl added, "I believe it is the best and most wonderful news for all of us."
Kompany appeared unwell and walked with a limp during Bayern's 6-1 victory over RB Leipzig in mid-October. He was uncertain for the home match against Arsenal four days later but managed to coach during the 2-2 draw, just two days before he collapsed at training.
