Benfica in talks to hire Fulham's Silva as new coach

Benfica is in serious talks to make Marco Silva their new head coach. Negotiations for a possible agreement are moving ahead well.

Silva is currently the head coach at Fulham. His contract at Craven Cottage ends this month. Fulham has offered him a new deal, but the Portuguese coach has not accepted it yet, which leaves his future unclear.

BBC Sport reported on Tuesday that talks between Silva and Benfica have picked up in recent days. Both sides seem to be close to an agreement for Silva to return to Portuguese football.

Benfica is looking for a new head coach after Jose Mourinho left the club. Mourinho had a brief second stint with Benfica and has now signed a three-year contract to coach Real Madrid.

During his time at Benfica, Mourinho helped the club finish third in the Primeira Liga before he moved on.

Silva joined Fulham in 2021 from Everton F.C. He quickly led Fulham back to the Premier League after their relegation. Since then, he has helped Fulham stay in the top flight, finishing 11th last season and tying on points with Chelsea.

While there is no official agreement yet, talks are likely to continue in the coming days. Benfica wants to finalize their new coach ahead of the upcoming season.
