Binance, a major cryptocurrency exchange, has reported a security breach. The company says the financial impact of this incident is around $6.3 billion due to unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
To address this situation, Binance has promised to cover all losses using its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and its own funds.
The company’s initial findings suggest that the breach might have started with a laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. This laptop possibly allowed an attacker to enter a service container and make unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
On Friday, Binance shared updates on X, stating that there was no proof that any private keys from wallets were leaked. The exchange also mentioned that it collaborated with blockchain partners to freeze about $3 billion of the affected assets.
Binance plans to share a detailed report after finishing its investigation and confirming all facts. "Binance will cover all losses from the SAFU fund and the company’s funds. User funds are safe," the company assured.
Immediate Actions
To respond quickly, Binance first suspended all deposits and withdrawals. The company also performed security checks, canceled the authorization for the affected addresses, and teamed up with law enforcement and blockchain experts to track and recover the lost funds.
Later, Binance clarified that deposits were still open and working as usual. But withdrawals remained suspended while their team worked to enhance security for the withdrawal service and related addresses.
Binance hopes to restart withdrawals within 48 hours and promises to keep users updated. Ongoing investigations aim to uncover the full attack path, highlighting that the compromised computer might have been the entry point.
The company is also working with law enforcement to identify those behind the attack and ensure they face justice.
Further Precautions
As a precaution, Binance has temporarily halted Binance Alpha trading. This includes services like CEX Buy Token, Alpha Instant, and CEX purchase prediction marketing using users’ spot wallet funds.
Trading will resume once the security issues are sorted out. Binance reassured users that their funds are safe.
The company thanked its industry partners who helped freeze the affected assets, calling it a collective effort. It plans to keep sharing verified updates through its official channels and will release an updated Proof of Reserves after the issues are resolved.
This incident adds to a growing list of cyberattacks targeting global tech companies, threatening their operations and customer data. Firms like PwC, Stryker, and Telus Digital recently faced similar cybersecurity breaches.
