Man United and Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has called Cristiano Ronaldo the biggest legend of Portugal's national team. He talked about the legendary forward's lasting impact on the country.
Fernandes shared that he recently had a chat with Ronaldo. He told his former Portugal teammate how much he admires him.
In a post by football expert Fabrizio Romano on X on Saturday, Fernandes was quoted saying, "I spoke with Cristiano Ronaldo and told him that he is and will always remain the greatest icon of our national team and our country."
He also addressed talk about divisions in the Portuguese squad. Fernandes insisted that the national team is united.
"Our national team is united, not divided," Fernandes added.
He emphasized that any issues within the team should be sorted out internally. The goal is to find a positive solution for everyone involved.
"Matters must be resolved internally and conclude well for both parties," he said.
Fernandes’ words show the respect Ronaldo still gets in Portuguese football. The veteran forward is a key part of the country’s football history and identity.
Meanwhile, Portugal coach Jorge Jesus talked about Ronaldo’s importance to Portugal. He called the five-time Ballon d’Or winner a symbol of both the national team and the country.
"I can’t ignore Cristiano Ronaldo topic. Cris is a symbol of the Portuguese national team. He is a symbol of Portugal. Let that be absolutely clear," Jesus said.
However, Jesus did not go into more detail at that moment. He indicated there would be a chance to discuss it more after the match.
"After the game, answering the question, there will be plenty of time to talk about that," he added.
