BUK professor talks about her role in UN nuclear panel

Rabia Sa’id is a physics professor at Bayero University, Kano (BUK). She said her appointment to the United Nations Scientific Panel on the Effects of Nuclear War (2025, 2027) is not new.

In a post on her verified Facebook page, Mrs Sa’id explained that she was appointed by the UN Secretary-General to the 21-member panel last December.

This appointment comes from UN General Assembly Resolution 79/238. It puts Mrs Sa’id among top scientists looking at global nuclear threats.

A report from PREMIUM TIMES, which referenced an article by BUK Media, sparked new discussions about her appointment on social media.

After seeing the reactions online, Mrs Sa’id clarified that the reports do not indicate a new appointment.

“Inasmuch as I thank you for all your good wishes, it’s to be noted that this is not a new appointment. It is the same appointment that we celebrated last year when the UN Secretary-General announced the members of the UN Panel on the effects of nuclear war!” she said.

“I believe someone just posted again, and it was reposted and went viral.”

Mrs Sa’id mentioned that the panel has been working since its inauguration in December at the UN Headquarters in New York.

She added that since then, the panel has held several virtual meetings and even an in-person meeting in Vienna, Austria, in March.

She also said the panel plans more sessions in Geneva, Switzerland, in September, along with a series of regional stakeholder meetings.

“Another meeting will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, in September and several other regional stakeholder meetings before the submission of the report to the UN General Assembly in 2027! Thank you for celebrating me again,” she stated.

The panel’s findings are set to be presented in 2027. This will help shape international policy on reducing nuclear risks, global security, and humanitarian protection.
