Veteran Nollywood actress and filmmaker Bukky Wright premiered The Return of Omotara Johnson on Saturday. This sequel is the long-awaited follow-up to her 2008 Yoruba crime drama. The film returns to cinemas 15 years after the original captured many hearts.

The Lagos premiere took place at the Monarch Event Centre in Lekki. It happened just before the film’s nationwide release on 10 July. The event attracted many stars, including actors, musicians, business leaders, royalty, and politicians.

Some of the big names present included Toyin Abraham, Iyabo Ojo, Femi Adebayo, Lateef Adedimeji, Timini Egbuson, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Gabriel Afolayan, Jide Kosoko, Yomi Fash-Lanso, Eniola Badmus, Bolaji Ogunmola, and Bianca Ugowanne.

Also in attendance were celebrity fashion entrepreneur Seyi Vodi, rapper Zlatan, singer Reekado Banks, transport union leader MC Oluomo, socialite IBD Dende, Balogun Lai Labode, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Egbaland, and the Managing Director of Parallax Bank, Olufemi Bakre. Olori Ronke Ademiluyi, the wife of the Ooni of Ife, and Ovation International publisher Dele Momodu were also there.

Ms Wright arrived with her son and received a warm welcome from the guests. She thanked everyone who supported the project from the beginning to the end.

The Return of Omotara Johnson

The Return of Omotara Johnson marks Wright’s comeback to film production. It revisits one of the Yoruba-language films that made her a leading actress in Nollywood during the late 2000s.

In preparation for the sequel, she uploaded the first two Omotara Johnson films to her YouTube channel. This move introduces the franchise to a new generation of viewers while reconnecting longtime fans with the story.

The original film released in 2008 followed Omotara Johnson, a brave but morally conflicted woman. Her life was shaped by crime, betrayal, and violent confrontations. The character became one of the most unforgettable female antiheroes in modern Yoruba cinema.

The sequel is set 15 years later. Omotara has left her criminal past behind to raise her son. But she is forced back into that life when her son becomes the prime suspect in a murder case. As old enemies return and hidden secrets come to light, she must face unfinished battles while protecting her family.

The film deals with themes of redemption, motherhood, loyalty, legacy, and the impact of past choices.

It features a strong cast including Bukky Wright, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Shaffy Bello, Toyin Abraham, Ali Nuhu, and Chidi Mokeme. The producers said post-production was done in the United Kingdom to improve the film’s technical quality.

Before the Lagos premiere, the film had a special screening in Abuja on 28 June as part of the lead-up to its nationwide cinema release.
