Calabar Shooting: Police Arrest Student Suspected of Cult Activities

The Police Command in Cross River State has arrested a 24-year-old student. He is linked to a viral video showing suspected cult members shooting from a moving car in Calabar.

The command released a statement on Saturday from its spokesperson, Sunday Eitokpah. He said the incident happened in the early hours of 17 September.

Mr Eitokpah, who is an assistant superintendent of police, said the arrest came after the Commissioner of Police, Ajo Ordue, ordered that those involved should be quickly found and caught.

The deputy commissioner of police in charge of operations, along with the Violence Crime Response Unit, started an intelligence-led operation around 11:30 p.m. on 17 September.

"The operation led to finding and tracking the vehicle seen in the viral video. This resulted in the arrest of its driver.

"Information from the operation helped police trace a key suspect to a hotel in Calabar, where he was also arrested."

The spokesperson named the suspect as a student at the University of Cross River. He reportedly said during questioning that he is a leader of the Vikings Confraternity.

He also admitted to being the one firing shots in the viral video.

Mr Eitokpah quoted the suspect saying that he took part in a sign-out event on the day of the shooting. He claimed another member of the group gave him the gun used in the incident.

The spokesperson added that police are working hard to find and arrest others involved in the shooting.

He mentioned that they are still investigating how the suspect got the gun and how the vehicle was moving around.

He quoted the police commissioner as saying the investigation should be done properly. All who took part in or helped with the alleged shooting should be brought to justice.

The police commissioner also warned that shooting guns in public places is a serious security issue. He urged residents to report any suspicious activities, illegal guns, or cult-related actions to the police.
