Cameroon knocks Nigeria out of WAFCON

A new champion will rise at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after Nigeria, the defending champions, were knocked out by Cameroon in the quarter-finals on Sunday, according to PUNCH Sports Extra. South Africa, who also won in 2022, were eliminated by the hosts Morocco on Saturday.

The Indomitable Lionesses showed strong determination in Casablanca. They ended Nigeria’s title defense and secured their place in the semi-finals. They also qualified for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Cameroon scored the winning goal in the 19th minute. Myriam Maéva Nyadjou, just 20 years old, struck a powerful shot from long range. The ball flew into the top corner, leaving Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie with no chance.

Nigeria quickly sought to equalize a minute later. Rasheedat Ajibade sent a dangerous cross into the box, but Gift Monday could not connect properly as Cameroon handled the threat well. The Super Falcons kept attacking and almost scored again in the 28th minute. Rinsola Babajide’s pass found Jennifer Echegini in a good spot, but her shot was saved as Cameroon held onto their slim lead.

Even though Nigeria had some possession and chances, Cameroon stayed solid in defense. They took their 1-0 lead into half-time. Nigeria came out for the second half with more urgency, hoping for an equalizer. But Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina was in great form.

In the 70th minute, she made one of the best saves of the tournament. She stretched out to stop Uchenna Kanu’s powerful header, keeping her team ahead. Cameroon nearly added to their lead six minutes before the end. Achta Njoya's free-kick from a tough angle forced Nnadozie to make a quick save, tipping the ball over the bar.

Nigeria pushed hard in the final moments, trying to force extra time. Substitute Esther Okoronkwo used her speed to beat her defender and took a left-footed shot that went just wide of the post. Asisat Oshoala was right next to her, ready for an easy pass.

Cameroon held on in the closing minutes to secure a memorable win. They eliminated the 10-time champions and booked their ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. After Nigeria’s loss, the Super Falcons will meet South Africa on Thursday. This match will decide who represents Africa in the inter-confederation World Cup play-offs.
