Cameroon knocks Nigeria out of WAFCON with 1-0 win

Cameroon has moved to the semi-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after beating Nigeria 1-0 in their quarter-final match in Casablanca on Sunday.

Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen scored in the 19th minute to give the Indomitable Lionesses the lead at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium.

Nigeria was in control for much of the later part of the first half and kept pushing for an equaliser after the break but could not break through Cameroon’s defence.

Cameroon's goalkeeper made an important save from close range in the second half, stopping the Super Falcons from scoring.

This defeat has ended Nigeria’s title defence and means they will not reach the semi-finals.

It also means Nigeria will miss the automatic qualification spot for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. This spot is for the four WAFCON semi-finalists.

Nigeria entered the quarter-final as defending champions and had a strong record against Cameroon at the WAFCON. They had previously won 1-0 against Cameroon in the quarter-finals in 2022.

The Super Falcons have reached the knockout stages at every centralised edition of the tournament. They were aiming for their 10th appearance at the Women’s World Cup.

Cameroon will now move on to the semi-finals, where they will face Morocco. Morocco won their quarter-final match against South Africa with a score of 2-1.
