Cape Verde's national football team coach, Bubister, said his team will face Argentina with the right mindset in their knockout game. This match is part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Cape Verde made history by reaching the knockout stage in their first World Cup appearance. They secured this spot after a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia on Friday. This makes Cape Verde the smallest country to reach this stage in World Cup history.
The West African team finished second in Group H with three points. They stayed undefeated in a tough group that included Spain and Uruguay. Next, they will play against the reigning champions, Argentina, in the round of 32.
After the match against Saudi Arabia, Coach Bubister reflected on their surprising achievement. He said, "It’s a bit of a shock, although we’d always had it in mind that we might reach this stage after the first two matches."
Bubister continued, "We told the players they had to work hard and have confidence because the reward would come. And here we are. The people of Cape Verde should be proud of what this team has done so far. It’s something incredible."
For Coach Bubister and his players, facing Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, is a big honor. He said they will approach the game with confidence while staying true to their style. "They have Messi, who needs no introduction. We represent our island, but we also represent Africa. It’s a source of immense pride."
He added, "We’ll play our game with the right attitude and a sense of responsibility, but also with our own personality and character."
Cape Verde will play Argentina on Friday, July 3, at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
