The Cape Verde national football team came back home to a warm welcome on Sunday. Tens of thousands of happy fans turned the capital city, Praia, into a big party after the Blue Sharks' remarkable run in the FIFA World Cup.

Even though they were eliminated by the current champions, Argentina, the players received a cheering crowd at the airport. Fans filled the area, singing, dancing, drumming, chanting, and waving Cape Verdean flags. They celebrated a team that did better than expected on the world stage.

This emotional return happened just days after Cape Verde lost to Argentina and coincided with the country’s Independence Day celebrations. This year marks 51 years since they gained freedom from Portuguese rule.

Vozinha Enjoys Special Welcome

Goalkeeper Vozinha, who impressed many with his skills during the World Cup, called the welcome a special moment for the players and the country.

“It is a very great moment for us to be here with our people,” said Vozinha, whose real name is Josimar José Évora Dias, while speaking to the fans.

“We wanted something bigger, but we didn’t go through to the next stage. Now we enjoy the moment and celebrate with our people.”

The airport was filled with blue as fans chanted Vozinha’s name and those of other players, like centre-back Pico Lopes. During the celebration, players signed fans' football shirts and took pictures with them.

One fan told the BBC she came to the welcome to thank the team for inspiring the nation.

Cape Verde entered the World Cup as the second-smallest nation in the tournament's history. They made their debut on football's biggest stage. The Blue Sharks showed they could compete with top teams, holding their own against famous sides like Spain, Uruguay, and Argentina.

A World Cup Journey to Remember

Before the tournament, Cape Verde was ranked 67th in the world. They surprised everyone during the competition.

Three tough draws in the group stage, including a memorable goalless draw against European champions Spain in their first match, secured them a spot in the knockout rounds. This set up a challenging match against Argentina.

Facing Lionel Messi and his teammates, Cape Verde gave one of the tournament’s bravest performances.

Argentina took the lead with a goal from Messi, but the Blue Sharks equalized to make it 1-1. They pushed the match into extra time.

Argentina regained the lead, but Cape Verde struck back with a stunning goal from Sidny Lopes Cabral, leveling it at 2-2.

As the match seemed to be heading for penalties, heartbreak came when Cristian Romero’s header took a bad bounce off Diney Borges and went in. This sent Argentina through and ended Cape Verde’s amazing World Cup adventure.

Bubista: ‘We Made History’

Even with the tough loss, head coach Pedro Leitão Brito, known as Bubista, said his players gave the nation reasons to celebrate.

“We showed that we may be a small country, but we can play against the best teams in the world,” he said.

“That’s a reason for pride. We made history for our country. They can be proud of representing our country.”

Although their dream run ended short of the semifinals, Cape Verde’s efforts won the hearts of football fans everywhere. They secured a special place in the nation’s sports history.

For many fans in Praia on Sunday, the celebration was not about losing but about a team that dared to dream. They challenged some of the biggest names in football and returned home as national heroes.
