Cardiff’s Principality Stadium is now a possible venue for the highly anticipated fight between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. The Welsh stadium is reportedly ready to meet the broadcast needs that have delayed plans for the fight to take place at Wembley Stadium, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
This fight is one of the most awaited events in British boxing. But it looked like it might fall apart again. Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, and Joshua himself said their contract requires the fight to happen in the UK. Efforts to shift the fight to Madison Square Garden in New York faced challenges.
Netflix, the broadcaster, wants to attract more American viewers. This means the fight would need to start in the early hours of the morning in the UK. Wembley Stadium cannot fit this timing due to strict curfew rules. But Cardiff is said to be open to a start time of around 2am.
The venue, often called the Millennium Stadium, also has a retractable roof. This feature would protect against bad weather for the planned fight in November. Joshua’s contract for the fight has a condition that it must be held in the UK. Efforts by the promotional company Sela to arrange the fight in New York have faced strong opposition from Hearn.
Hearn has proposed renegotiating the deal. He suggested a higher purse to cover taxes, giving Joshua something to think about. Still, both men remain firm on having the fight in the UK.
Spencer Brown, a supporter of Fury, claims the fight is still on. Yet, there is still a chance it could fall through, as it has before. Previous attempts to set up this bout have come close, only to collapse.
As the contract issues continue, Joshua has gone back to training at Ben Davison’s gym in Essex. He is waiting for a solution. The 36-year-old officially ended his partnership with Davison after losing to Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in September 2024. After that, he joined Oleksandr Usyk’s training team in Spain, helping the Ukrainian win against Jake Paul and Kristian Prenga over the last nine months.
