Manchester United manager Michael Carrick said he felt no relief after his team’s exciting 3-2 Champions League win against Roma. He only felt pride in his players who showed they care a lot.
United came from behind at Old Trafford to finally end a long winless streak. Matheus Cunha scored twice in a wild finish before getting a red card. Shea Lacey, a young player from the academy, came off the bench and provided key assists.
Fabrizio Romano, a football transfer expert, shared Carrick's thoughts on X on Wednesday. When asked if the win brought relief, Carrick said, “Genuinely no. I didn’t feel relief. It was more, I was genuinely pleased for the players. I know how much they care. I know what they give. It was just more seeing everybody and the feeling that we can generate when we do things right!”
Praise for Shea Lacey
Carrick gave special praise to Lacey. He said Lacey came into the game when United was losing and quickly boosted the team's spirit.
“He’s got great ability. That glint in his eyes and he plays with a bit of mischief. He was desperate to do well. I was just as happy seeing him defend as a right back! He gave everyone a lift coming on the pitch. I am so happy.”
Carrick also commented on Cunha’s active performance, which ended with a red card. He said, “I was a bit disappointed with how it finished but it just shows how much he cares and he’s willing to do when he’s in that frame of mind. When he’s in that mood, and he plays like that… that’s what we want him here.”
Cunha Highlights Lacey's Impact
Cunha himself praised Lacey’s role in the game. He said, “What an unbelievable pass from Shea! It’s beautiful when you have an academy player that comes and has a great impact in the game. When I saw the ball going, to be honest, I didn’t believe it, the comeback!”
This victory gives Manchester United a much-needed lift in the Champions League.
