Chelle talks about new players for Eagles

Franco-Malian coach Eric Chelle has explained why he is bringing in new players for the Super Eagles. He believes this change is part of a plan to improve the team's overall quality for future competitions, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

Chelle named eight players from the Nigeria Premier Football League in his squad for the Unity Cup. He used this tournament to give senior debuts to Femi Azeez, Owen Oseni, Arthur Okonkwo, and Rafiu Durosinmi.

Abdullahi Bewene, a defender with Banik Ostrava, got his first cap in a friendly match that ended in a draw against Poland. Genk's Christian Akpan received a last-minute call-up for the friendly against Portugal in Leiria on June 10.

Chelle said the team selections were made after a careful look at the team's performances over the past year. He wants to close the gap between Nigeria and the best teams on the continent.

“We have analysed our game over the past year and have tried to bring in players who can help the team grow,” the coach said.

“We need to improve because, for me and for everyone, it is often the smallest details that make the difference between being the best team and winning a trophy.”

As the Eagles prepare for the friendly against Portugal, they have 22 players in Lisbon. Out of the 19 who came from Warsaw, Rafiu Durosinmi was excused for personal reasons. Alex Iwobi and Akpan have since joined the group.

Samuel Chukwueze arrived with the squad on Friday. Chelle is using this time to check his options as they get ready for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
