AC Milan coach Ruben Amorim has shown support for Samuel Chukwueze and new signing Diego Moreira in their fight for a starting position at AC Milan. He also hinted that Chukwueze might play a big role as a wing-back this season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Moreira joined Milan for €50 million. He is expected to push for a starting place, but Amorim thinks the Portugal international can play in different positions.
The Milan coach believes Chukwueze has special qualities that make him hard to replace. Both players will compete for the same spot, but they could also play together in some matches.
“Moreira can play as a full-back on either the right or left; perhaps he’ll play more on the right. At a big club, it’s important to have two excellent players in each position. Moreira and Chukwueze have important characteristics that are difficult to find in a single player,” Amorim said, according to MilanNews.
“If Chukwueze isn’t available, we need a player with the same characteristics so the team doesn’t suffer too much. Saelemaekers wants to get inside the pitch; he has a different game. They’ll play together sometimes, but overall they’ll fight for the position.”
Chukwueze has shown he can adapt to Amorim’s style. He started Milan’s season opener as a right wing-back against Torino and provided an assist.
The Nigerian is pleased with how he played and thinks this new role has boosted his confidence.
“I’m happy to be back like this, it gives me confidence. I wanted to start the season like this, I’m happy. But now that’s already in the past, let’s focus on the next one. I’m ready, it’s my job. I’ll give it my all,” he said.
With Moreira also able to play on either side, Chukwueze will face more competition as he aims to secure his spot under Amorim this season.
